There are many different ways to heat your home. You can choose a regular furnace, a fireplace, gas log inserts, or a wood burning stove. Another heat source that people are using is a pellet burning stove. The thing that many people don’t realize, however, is that pellet stoves require annual maintenance just like a wood burning fireplace.
Tips for Monthly Maintenance
One important thing to realize is that the more you use your pellet burner, the more regular maintenance is required. In fact, if you use your stove regularly, you’ll want to clean your stove weekly. Besides the amount of time your burner is in use, the type of pellets you burn will also play into how often you should do some home care. As with many things, the better (more expensive) brand of pellets you use, the cleaner and hotter your burn will be. Keep in mind that there are three different types of pellets you can use: softwood, hardwood, or a mix of the two. Just try a few different brands to see what brand works best for you.
The best thing you can do for your pellet burner is to give it a regular cleaning. You can do this quite quickly and easily using an ash vacuum, a vacuum designed just for this purpose. You don’t want to use your regular home vacuum because it will get quite sooty and ashy. Make sure that your pellet burner has cooled down completely before you start cleaning.
Sometimes when you burn pellets, hard “clinkers” form from the ash that melts and hardens. These aren’t good for your pellet burner because they can impede airflow and mess up the mix of fuel and oxygen in the burn pot. You’ll want to use a special rake made just to get these out. You’ll also want to empty out the ash drawer and clean the heat exchanger.
After you get the interior of your stove cleaned out, you’ll want to clean the glass. This way you’ll be able to see if your fuel is burning efficiently. Just use paper towels and a glass cleaner to clean the inside and outside of the glass. Check the label to make sure that the glass cleaner can be used on heated glass.
