No matter which type of chimney system you have (oil or gas for your furnace, wood-burning or electric for your fireplace, or something else), the importance of annual inspections, regular cleanings, and swift repair work is a shared essential among them all.
Here in Worcester and its surrounding areas, most of these appliances see a lot of use during fall and wintertime once temperatures drop! That said, on days like these where the weather is warm, the sun is shining, and you’re cranking up the air conditioning, the state of your chimney is probably the last thing on your mind.
But picture this: It’s the first chilly evening of the year, the leaves are falling, and you’re ready to cozy up in your home and relax. But when you go to turn on your heating appliance, you remember that you never got that annual inspection done! You could run it anyway and run the risk of malfunction, inefficiency, or even home damage or injury. But if you’re playing it safe (which we recommend), your only option is to hold off use and get your inspection scheduled.
Now, you may think waiting a few more days to kick off your burning season or fire up your heating appliance isn’t a big deal… That said, many have just had the same experience as you and are trying to book an appointment, too! In fact, once fall rolls around, our schedule books fill up fast, so finding that ideal appointment time in the near future isn’t going to be as likely.
And if our sweeps discover any damage or buildup after the inspection, then you’ll have to go through the whole scheduling process all over again. Not to mention, you’ll now be weeks into the colder season without being able to enjoy your system to the fullest.
Reduce Stress by Booking Early
Now, fall isn’t just a busy time for us – it’s known for being a busy time for many. A lot of homeowners find themselves preparing for holiday festivities, and if you have kids at school, their schedules are likely now full of activities and events. Squeezing in time for a chimney inspection isn’t going to be the easiest thing to do, which is why we urge homeowners to get this maintenance done now!
This time of year is much more flexible and open, so we’re certain you’ll be able to find a time and date that works well for you – all while your system is out of use anyway! But the time to give us a call is now. Spring is nearing its end, which leaves just a few short months of summer before our schedule books get packed again.
Why wait? Get one thing off of your checklist early, so you can enjoy your chilly nights indoors to the fullest come autumn.
Save Time & Money on Repairs
Another pro of forward scheduling is getting an early start on any repair work. Addressing damages earlier on is always the more beneficial route. Not only does it save you time and headaches down the road, it also ensures you don’t wind up paying more for damage that could have been easily fixed months before.
Basically, if your masonry is already starting to crumble, it won’t just hold tight until you’re ready to invest in repairs. It will slowly worsen with time, and all too often, what could have been a fairly easy and affordable repair is now a costly and time-consuming one.
Also, certain damages cause other areas of your system to be vulnerable, too. Consider your chimney cap. A damaged cap is not hard to replace, and a new one definitely won’t break the bank. Yet, if a broken or misplaced cap is ignored, your chimney is now more prone to experience water damage that could put your liner at risk.
In other words, what could have been a quick job replacing a damaged component has now turned into a full relining job!
Another thing to keep in mind is that some repairs shouldn’t be done in colder weather. When doing something like tuckpointing to a masonry chimney, for example, the materials used need to properly cure in a certain temperature range. When doing this work in the winter, your results won’t be as good, and we may even suggest waiting until the following spring to get it done. This means no fireplace all winter – not ideal!
