Chimney Caps and Dampers

The purpose of a chimney cap is to prevent rain, snow, ice and debris from collecting in your chimney and to keep animals out. Chimney caps also provide spark protection and the size and area of the screen is essential to insure proper venting and draft requirements.

In some instances, a properly installed chimney cap may increase draft and prevent downdraft in chimneys. The installation of a chimney cap may be one piece of the solution to poor draft and smoking problems. Draft problems can be diagnosed by a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep from Firesafe Chimney Services, INC. having ectgensice air pressure and vent training.

Manufactured chimney systems require the chimney cap be UL Listed and Tested to the chimney system which the cap is being installed.

We recommend stainless steel or Copper Chimney Caps be installed which will resist corrosion and prevent rust staining of your chimney and roof. The ideal chimney cap shall cover all surface areas of the chimney to protect the entire exterior top of the surface area to prevent water damage to the masonry chimney.

Many fireplace dampers are in need of repair or replacement. sometime getting linkage and parts to repair one of the old fireplace dampers is difficult or impossible to find. We highly recommend replacing old fireplace dampers that seal at the throat of the fireplace with a top sealing damper that mounts on the very top of the chimney. When the fireplace is not in use, the dampers seals of the flue system and prevents heat loss to the home. Firesafe Chimney Services, INC. can replace your old heat losing damper with a new top sealing damper that will also serve as protection from animals, leaves and debris from collecting and nesting in your chimney.

Note: Top sealing dampers should never be installed on a wood burning stove.
